ERIC'S STAR RATINGS

Review:
DiggersFor some reasons comedians want to do drama, and this is a case in point. The cast has done quite a number of comedies in the past, none of which have done very well at the box office, so I guess they decided that doing a talky independent film might get them something different in the future. This is basically a direct to video release with a nominal theatrical release for reasons of prestige.

It's 1976, and the days of the independent clamdigger are numbered. A conglomerate called South Shell has gotten the exclusive fighing rights to half the great South bay between Long and Fire Islands, and that, plus overfishing means that an age-old tradition is about to be extinguished. For Hunt(Paul Rudd) and his sister Gina(Maura Tierney), this economic catastrophe has been compounded by the loss of their father just before the opening credits start.

But life is made bearable by old friends, who are pretty much in the same situation, you've got Jack(Ron Eldard), who's shagging all the ladies of certain age, Cons(Josh Hamilton), who's the local drug dealer and Lozo(Ken Marino), who's got a wife named Julie(Sarah Paulson), who's been barefoot and pregnant since the Johnson administration.

Add to the mix, Zoey(Lauren Ambrose), who's in a voluntary exile from the City, and you have one of those unoriginal ensembles which is mostly about nothing but aspires to be somewhat profound. In that it fails.

Still, it's rather harmless, and it does have it's moments. If you're a fan of tiny independent films, this might be worth a look, and as it's coming out on DVD for quite a bit less money for a rental simultaneously with the theatrical release, there's no reason to see this at the theater at all.
