Review:
Alvin
Johnson (Nick Cannon) is a nerd. He’s got brains galore and is
going to get a scholarship in engineering from the Ford Motor
company, but then he hates being part of the pariah caste at high
school. Then one Paris Morgan(Christina Milian), the belle of the
A-list gets into a small fender-bender, and doesn’t have the bucks
to pay for it before her mom gets home, so Al decides to invest
the money he’s been saving to get the last part for his
scholarship-winning project on another one. Paris will be hired to
get him on the A-list and he’ll enjoy his last quarter in High
School.
This is a remake of a film called "Can’t Buy Me Love" and Michael
Swerdlick, who wrote it, didn’t really help director Beyer’s redo
all that much. It’s tired and rather boring. After all the "be
yourself" moral [best buds Kenan Thompson, Kevin Christy and Kal
Penn are ditched and our hero gets his comeuppance] has been
rammed down our throats in most every Disney cartoon in the last
two decades, and the concept of self-improvement is one that
should be seen as a positive one.
But no. What we got is a third-rate "Faust" without the Devil.
Everything ends happily ever after but we see that coming from a
mile away. The only thing that’s good about this is that Ms.
Milian is a real hottie. She’s got a bright future ahead of her
and is very pleasing on the eyes.
Other than that, there’s really no reason to go. Wait until it
gets on cable.
