Review:
When
you have a film about nothing you have to have character and
performance to fill in the gaps left by the lack of plot. This has
both in spades.
Bob Harris (Bill Murray) is a faded movie star who’s come to
Tokyo in order to do commericals for a local brand of whiskey.
Charlotte(Scarlett Johansson)has made the mistake of going to with
her workaholic photographer husband John (Giovanni Ribisi) on a
shoot. So for most of the time, both of them are stuck in a luxury
hotel in a foreign land and when they meet, they immediately fall
in love.
This is a platonic romance of sorts. They talk, walk around the
hotel for a while, talk some more, meet Charlotte’s friend
Charlie(Fumihiro Hayashi) and do a night on the town. Talk some
more….
This is one of those rare films, much like "My Dinner with
André," which SHOULD be a total bore, but instead facinates. The
reason is Murray. He gives the performance of his life, here.
Doing what he’s been famous for over a quarter century. Johansson
is a perfect foil for him, and between the two of them you are
completely mesmerized.
This is one of the best films of the year. Sofia has almost
surpassed her dad.
