RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK
by Mary Barnet

CHARLIE MOM

Located at 47-49 7th Avenue South, between Bleecker & Morton Streets, in an easily accesible and beautiful area of Greenwich Village for more than twenty years, this fine Chinese restaurant serves some of the best Chinese cuisine in the Village. Open 7 Days a Week from 11:45 a.m., until midnight Sun.-Thurs., until 1:00 a.m. Friday and Saturday. This fine restaurant has free delivery in the vicinity. Tel: 255-2848; FAX 645-5321.

CHARLIE MOM is a large, airy restaurant with a lovely, elegant back room with a nice view of the Greenwich Village Street Scene. The large selection of hot & spicy foods includes fine vegetarian dishes such as Brocolli in Garlic Sauce , the same sauce on Eggplant is also delicious. Other great vegetarian dishes are two Tofu dishes, Tofu Szechuan Style and Tofu Delight, also hot. A great not spicey vegetarian dish is the Sauteed Chinese Brocolli in Oyster Sauce. Also nice in the non-spicy meatless variety of dishes is Sauteed Baby Bok Choy w. Fresh Garlic Sauce. The vegetables are always fresh, as is all the food.

Meals are served by a staff of polite and attentive waitors and waitresses. All six Jumbo Shrimp dinners are delicious and the shrimp are large. Like all their hot & spicy dishes the Sa-Cha Shrimp is particularly good. My all time favorite is the Pan Fried Noodles, great with shrimp or beef, as well as chicken or pork. The Tangerine Beef is delicious.

Lunch Specials are liberal at just over five dollars a head, always hot and mostly quickly served. The variety, as in the regular menu, is large.

For those who do not like hot dishes so much, the Seafood Islander is terrific and the Sesame Beef is mouthwatering, too. Beef in Oyster Sauce is another old favorite that is great, too. All the noodle dishes are wonderful, especially if noodles are your favorite. Of the soups, we recommend the fine Seafood & Bean Curd Soup which is full of fresh seafood, as well as the great Pork & Pickled Cabbage Soup.

We are thrilled over the wonderful appetizers, especially the two hot & spicy dishes, Dumpling Szechuan Style and Spicy Chinese Cabbage. The old favorites, the Egg Rolls, Spring Rolls, and Vegetable Rolls are also great.

We give this really premium restaurant CHARLIE MOM 4 Arches
