Gil Noble honored on Malcolm X birthday

n Wednesday, May 19th, Gil Noble, the renowned producer and host of WABC-TV's weekly public affairs series Like It Is, will be presented with an El Hajj Malik el Shabazz Malcolm X Activist Award at the special tribute in honor of the 79th Birthday Anniversary of Malcolm X. The event will begin at 6 pm in the Medgar Evers College Auditorium, at 1650 Bedford Avenue in Brooklyn.

Gil Noble is treasured both locally and nationally as a dedicated journalist whose work has been an invaluable part of the struggle for African American advancement. For decades he has spent long hours of research and investigation to bring the consistently high quality of programming to be found on his program Like It Is.

Over the years, Noble has interviewed many prominent figures in society, including heads of state Michael Manley and P.J. Patterson (Jamaica), Maurice Bishop (Grenada) and Sekou Ture (Guinea). In entertainment, his interviews have included greats such as Sidney Poitier, Bill Cosby, Sarah Vaughan, Sammy Davis, Jr., Aretha Franklin and Harry Belafonte. He has also interviewed such political figures as Jesse Jackson, Stokley Carmichael (Kwame Ture) and Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. He has produced documentaries on W.E.B. DuBois, Malcolm X, Paul Robeson and Fannie Lou Hamer.

Noble has received over 650 community awards, numerous industry awards including seven Emmys, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Association of Black Journalists, and five honorary doctorates.

This gala event is being presented by the Medgar Evers Student Government, People of the Sun-Middle Passage Collective, and AKEEM Productions in celebration of Woman's History Month. Special performances will be featured by Shanto, Crown Heights Youth Collective, Kowteff and the New Kemit Society, and spoken word performances will run throughout the evening. There will also be an African Market Place.

Admission is $15.00 or $10.00 for students and seniors. To get to Medgar Evers College, take the B49 bus to Crown Street or the #2, 3, 4, 5 subway to Franklin Avenue. For more information call Akeem at (718) 270-4902.
