Episcopal Diocese of New York Initiates Dialogue on
Reparations
n a bold move,
at its Diocesan Convention of 2003, the Episcopal Diocese of New York
called for the creation of a Task Force to study the issue of reparation
to descendants of slavery. In preparation for bringing forth a further
proposal about this important issue at the Convention of 2005, the Task
Force plans to provide opportunities for the larger diocesan community –
and anyone else who wishes to participate – to discuss the subject of
reparations.
| Therefore, on Saturday April 23, from 9:30 to 3 pm, a
Convocation will be held at the Church of the Intercession at 155th
Street and Broadway. The Task Force will seek to:
Help people understand what reparations is and how to
advocate for it
Educate people to recognize the "sin" that was committed
under slavery, and the spiritual use for the church
Make people aware of the diocesan resolution and the reason
for it
Identify steps needed by the diocese to engage the issue of
reparations
Through dialogue and critical thinking, participants will examine
the history, theology, process, and applicable models for
reparations. The day will include a keynote speech by this author,
breakout sessions, a showing of the film "Reparations: The Final
Passage," and Rt. Rev. Mark Sisk, Bishop of New York, will be the
Chief Celebrant and will deliver the Bishop’s Charge. |
