COUNCIL MEMBERS CONTINUE
TO SPEAK OUT STRONGLY
AGAINST WAR ON IRAQ

ew York City Council Members Kendall Stewart, Charles Barron and Bill Perkins, who have each spoken out strongly against a war on Iraq, have been joined by additional voices in the City Council.

In the most recent City Council meeting, Council Member Margarita Lopez wore a button with the words, "What Is War Good For? Absolutely Nothing." She said of this button, which she's had for 15 years, "I wear it today addressed to the President of our nation. I am raising the fact that we are going in a direction that is dangerous. Our children may come back in ways we don't want to see them. Life never returns once it's taken." She said that she wants to invite every New Yorker to call their members of Congress and the President and let them know where they stand on the issue of an invasion of Iraq. "We need to be very careful about where we are going and what we are doing," she warned.

Council Member Robert Jackson pointed out that he, too, was wearing a button. It said "The World Says No to War - NYC Feb. 15," referring to the tremendously important anti-war rally to be held in Manhattan on Saturday, February 15th. He asked his colleagues to join him on that date to oppose the impending war on Iraq.

Jackson spoke of the fact that he, as an individual, is against all wars, and of his conviction that war brings nothing but death, heartbreak and fear. "No one has the right to take the life of another human being," he stated, "so I rise as a public representative to let you know that we have got to stand in opposition to the impending war on Iraq."
