"Life as I see It"

By Randy Burns

 What's Christmas?

Well...Christmas is what they call 'The Holidays' now. It used to be 'Merry Christmas -- Merry Christmas' everywhere, but not anymore. In our quest to offend no one, we have offended ourselves, our loved ones, and far too many precious memories. If precious memories grew on trees -- would they have grown on holiday trees? Come on, come on people, we just sat down and took this one. We let it slide. Some think it's a small price to pay for getting rid of 'Merry Christmas,' for who, in god's name, needs to hear that phrase anymore? I do. Maybe not you or the person next to you, or anyone else you know...but something as classic as 'Merry Christmas' should have been left alone.

Why haven't they changed the Christmas songs" You know, use computers to take 'Merry Christmas' away from Bing's voice, Johnny Mathis and Perry Como...and the rest of those old fucks who could never have been as 'correct' as our society is today. Let's get rid of Christmas completely. Let's pretend Christmas never existed...and will never exist again. It's funny how 'Merry Christmas' was canned...when there were no complaints! Say goodbye. You let the idiots do this.

We still have our Christmas past to remember. The days of warm fires and family, good booze and good friends. Most of the booze is gone now, and most of the friends too...at least for me. So, we play down the liquor and don't smoke at Christmas gatherings. Our friends are few and far away. Many are dead, and the parents are gone...at least for me. How are the holidays treating you? Are the rituals still in place? Are they empty and brittle? Is it really fun when Christmas comes 'round again? What's missing?

We are missing. We are missing everything that was once dear to us. We're missing getting wacked and acting stupid...and sharing those moments with time tested friends. We are missing everything that is NOT politically correct....and last, but not least...we are missing Christmas...as it was and used to be. To Paul Bergen, Kevin Vanoist, Bob Everett, Bob Black, Mom Mulhern, Jeff Sanford and Luci, I'll be remembering you all this Christmas. You too, Mom and Dad. And to rest of you, Happy Holidays.

Randy Burns -- Christmas 2006.
