The kind of music performed by this group, which celebrates its
40th year in 2007, breaks down the music of Duke Ellington,
Thelonious Monk and others, inserting some maddening
improvisations - or as they put it, "instant compositions" -
into them, turning some moments almost unrecognizable but
enjoyable to those who have a knack for free improvisation.
On this year's tour, they are joined by pianist Misha
Mengelberg, who has been on the Dutch jazz scene for over 30
years, reedsman Michael Moore and percussionist Han Bennink, who
is known not only for his talent but also for his explosive
performances.
The ICP Orchestra, as can be heard on their latest record
(simply titled No. 307) is not for those who prefer linear,
well-rehearsed jazz. You should approach them with open ears
(and mind), without any kind of expectation. In other words, be
ready to be surprised.
