Andrea Quarantillo Informs Haitian Nationals about
Applying for TPS

Andrea Quarantillo, New York District Director of US Citizenship and Immigrations Services (USCIS), addressed the media and community leaders regarding Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti, available to Haitian nationals already in the United States by Jan. 12, 2010. The designation became effective on Jan. 21 and will remain in effect through July 22, 2011. The 180-day registration period for eligible Haitian nationals to apply will end July 20, 2010. by Donna Lamb

THE STATE OF THIS UNION

Having been the very first time I sat through such an address (I would normally just read the highlights the next day on the New York Times), I must confess that I was a bit bored by all the pomp and circumstance – the constant applauding between sentences, the forced smiles and everything else. Having said that, I should say that I was impressed by the manner in which the US president was firm in his speech.

Haitian American Council Member Mathieu Eugene Responding to Haiti Earthquake

In the aftermath of Haiti’s latest catastrophe, Council Member Mathieu Eugene, the first Haitian American elected to the City Council, sends his thoughts, prayers and heartfelt sympathy to his brothers and sisters in Haiti as they continue to cope with this tragedy. He also extends these sentiments to all those living in the United States and throughout the Diaspora who have, as he does, family and loved ones in Haiti. by Donna Lamb

SAVE THE DATE(ing)
The writer met Hattie Elliot, the founder of Save the Date(ing), on a stinging cold January morning at Snice, a little coffee shop on 8th Avenue and West 4th Street, a couple of blocks from the E train’s 14th street stop. This is the part of the city where things get wonky: 14th Street, 13th Street, gas station, traffic island, West 4th Street. The writer’s late and flustered but Elliot’s completely jazzed about Save the Date(ing), which she founded as a fun and nonstressful way for singles to meet. On the other hand, the nonstressful part is conditional. The stress, for the busy folks that sign up for the program, is the pleasurable kind. by Arlene McKanic

Poppin’ Johnny: a new American myth
The Poetry of George Wallace
Review by Lenny DellaRocca

One of the great things about Shakespeare is he’s truly a man for all seasons: Richard III is as great with Ian McKellan playing the title role as a 1930’s Fascist dictator and Romeo and Juliet are just as relevant as two American high school kids. And A Midsummer Night’s dream is just as delightful if it’s played by a bunch of flower draped Vassar coeds or modern day actors in their pajamas. If it's Theatre it's by Arlene McKanic

3 Unique Takes on the War Effort

Whatever surge we do in the real Afghanistan has no chance of being a self-sustaining success, unless there is a parallel surge — by Arab and Muslim political and religious leaders — against those who promote violent jihadism on the ground in Muslim lands and online in the Virtual Afghanistan.

TWO TICKETS TO HAVANA, PLEASE... REALLY
by Ernest Barteldes
Today, any American citizen can hop on a plane and fly to 'rogue nations' like Iran or North Korea, provided he or she gets a visa to enter those countries. Even though they are part of what the Bush administration called 'the Axis of Evil,' there is nothing (legally) that this country can do to against you if you decide to do so. However, the same does not ring true in case that same citizen decides to spend a few days sipping mojitos at a Caribbean island just 90 miles off the coast of Florida. If you do that, you are breaking the law, and might suffer dire consequences if you go for it anyway.STORY

Fat Chance

While passing by a local fast food restaurant, I saw an overweight child, around 12 years old,
bringing his tray to the table with his friend. Curious, I looked a little closer to see what this overweight
12 year old boy would be consuming, and surprise, it wasn’t a kids meal, hamburger, or even
French fries. This boy had a big salad on his tray....Then, his next action smashed my hopes.

From Producer/Director Michael Nash

There is a new phenomenon in the global arena called “Climate Refugees”. A climate refugee is a person displaced by climatically induced environmental disasters. Such disasters result from incremental and rapid ecological change, resulting in increased droughts, desertification, sea level rise, and the more frequent occurrence of extreme weather events such as hurricanes, cyclones, fires, mass flooding and tornadoes.
